Real Zaragoza and Telefónica thus join forces with a single goal: solidarity. The Aragonese club has always been open to all kinds of social initiatives and considers sport an unrivalled showcase to raise awareness. It is the first time that Telefónica has used the sponsorship of a football club to publicise a social action programme
Zaragoza, 29th July 2010. During the 2010/11 season, the shirts of Real Zaragoza football club will feature the image of Proniño, Telefónica’s social programme, managed in collaboration with the local operators of the Group in 13 countries in Latin America, whose aim is to contribute to the eradication of child labour in the region.
Telefónica has decided to take advantage of the visibility of football and the Spanish league, one of the best in the world and with an enormous following outside Spain, especially in Latin America, to publicise its Proniño social development programme - an initiative that has benefited (both directly and indirectly) over 300,000 children and teenagers in Latin America over the 5 years in which Telefónica has been managing the project.
Though the Proniño programme does not carry out direct activities in Spain, Telefónica and Fundación Telefónica are undertaking different actions to publicise it, including the Proniño Caravan that travelled around Spain in 2008 and 2009.
Telefónica’s collaboration with Real Zaragoza is now entering its seventh season, and forms part of the sponsorship and patronage activities undertaken by the company in Aragon, a region in which it leads the telecommunications and new technologies sector, with a total of some 1.4 million users, including its landline, mobile, internet and digital TV customers.
The sponsorship is complemented by Telefónica’s collaboration as the technological partner of Real Zaragoza through the services of Movistar, which will lead to the development of applications and services making it possible to share the love of football. In this regard, it will continue with projects such as "soydelzaragoza.com", which last season mobilised almost 5,000 fans in support of the club, to stay in the 1st division.
A serious problem in the world
Telefónica’s Proniño social development programme, managed since 2005 by Fundación Telefónica and the local operators of the Group in 13 countries in Latin America, aims to make a significant contribution to the progressive eradication of child labour in the region, by providing continued, sustainable and quality education to thousands of children and teenagers.
The programme, the main initiative developed from the private sphere to fight against this problem, is aligned with the Millennium Goals, which seek to eliminate the worst forms of child labour before 2015, and all child labour before 2020.
Proniño attends directly to 171,473 children and teenagers in 13 countries in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela). The programme is present at 5,247 educational centres (4,496 schools and 751 support centres) and has 302 Fundación Telefónica Classrooms.
Its basic pillars are the 116 NGOs of recognised international prestige with which it works directly, mobilising over 4,700 highly-qualified, specialised social workers.
